What do we mean when we speak of “self-love”? In contemporary culture, self-love is often framed as self-care, self-esteem, boundary-setting, or individual healing. While these approaches can be deeply supportive, they may also rest on an incomplete understanding of the “me” we are trying to love.
This practice weekend invites us into a more panoramic view.
Drawing on the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, we will explore the length, breadth, and depth of the “I” through teaching, meditative inquiry, and discussion. Together we will investigate how expanding our understanding of non-self transforms self-love from an endless project of curating ideas of self into a path of deep respect, interconnection, and awakening.
Through guided meditative inquiry, we will explore:
the long arc of our existence across beginningless samsara (length)
our radical kinship and interdependence with all beings (breadth)
the liberating insight of non-self and buddhanature (depth)
Rather than bypassing our humanity, this panoramic approach welcomes the fullness of our experience as intrinsically relational beings with humility, compassion, and discernment. We will also explore what it means to embody self-love both on and off the cushion.
At the heart of every expression of self-love is a sacred longing: the wish to be happy and free from suffering. This weekend explores how the Buddhist path expands our response to that longing into something more spacious, interconnected, and profoundly healing.
